St Marys Lincolns Post Mortem

Post by Oglethorp »

Nobody can say we are a young team like the Lincolns. This years team was comprised of all one 16 year old and the rest were all 17 or 18. No 19 or 20 year olds. It shouldn't surprise anyone that they weren't a much of a match for the Leamington Flyers in round one. Like any off season there will be some changes. One likely change will be in net. Emanuel Vella, a Knights draft pick, will not likely return If he isn't in the OHL he will likely go to a Jr.A team closer to home The Lincolns should look to acquire a #1 goalie. On defence they could lose Martin to the OHL and Whitworth to Jr A, or not. Either way if the retain what they have they will be OK on the blueline. If the Lincolns get their top 6 forwards back and Brandon Glover they should be a team to watch next year.

Most teams look for 17 year olds to add for the next season. St Marys needs to add a couple of 20 year old veterans to their team, if they can get them to come. They could afford to give up a 16 card for a veteran, but that maybe easier said than done. The coach and GM both have 16 year sons that will be looking for a place to play.

Some interesting decisions ahead for St Marys.

It would be great if they can get most of the kids to return next season. With that many returning players... Finding a good goalie might be the difference. With a good goalie and most of their players returning, they should be in position to battle for 5th-6th spot. Maybe even higher with good chemistry. :)

It was a difficult series for the Lincolns, who were overmatched and outscored 33-6. In Game 2, the Flyers sent three St. Marys players to the hospital.

Mike Tuffin was bleeding from the ears after a fight, while Tom McHenry suffered a concussion and Schrattner sustained a lacerated kidney after what Glover called clean hits
Ouch! That's an unlucky game...

Only hope for the Lincs and Preds is finding the money it will take to pay out of town talent to stay. At minimum gas and more realistically gas plus a few other perks. They've got some good local kids but not enough to compete without imports. These are small communities and the success of the teams have declined so much that older players just don't want to have to pay for the privilege of skating for a losing team. They operate more as farm clubs to other centers than viable clubs in their own right. Great place to be a young goalie though...
