Who really deserves 2nd place?

Post by Oglethorp »

London and LaSalle finish the season tied with 67 points, 3 head to head wins each 31 wins each and 14 losses. With a league wide goal differential calculation London comes out on top however head to head LaSalle outscored London 23-22. Who really deserves 2nd place?

I feel that a big part of the equation should be that although both clubs had 3 wins against each other, one of the LaSalle losses was in overtime. With the overtime loss, the Vipers actually win the season series 7 points to 6 points.

If this were the OHL the Vipers would win the tie break as the extra point earned from the OTL are included. Here is the OHL tie breaking rules:

TIE BREAKING SYSTEM
If two or more teams are tied for the final OHL playoff position in either conference, sudden-death playoff games will be used to determine the team that advances.
For all other playoff positions, the following tie-breaking procedures are in place:
1. The team with the most number of wins during the regular season shall be declared higher in the standings.
2. If two teams are still tied, the team with the best record in head-to-head competition (based on points including overtime losses) shall be declared higher in the standings. If more than two teams are tied after the first tie-breaker, the percentage of available points earned in games among each other shall be used to determine the standing.
3. If still tied, the team with the greater differential between goals scored for and against by clubs having equal standing after the second tie-breaker shall be declared higher in the standings.

But we don't follow the OHL rules, we follow OHA rules, which is:

To determine final regular season standings when Teams have equal points, the following system shall determine placement. The Team awarded the higher placing when tied with another shall be the Team with:
(a) the most wins (including regulation & overtime - NOT shootout). If wins are tied,
(b) best record versus the Team tied with. If records are equal,
(c) goal average, the formula is: goals for plus goals against divided into the goals for, with the answer expressed as a percent. The Team with the higher percent will be the higher standing Team.

This is from the OJHL website, the only place I've been able to find the tiebreaker formula.
