It's not competition though -- it's oversaturation of the market which leads to a watered down product in general. Not to mention that the "outlaw" leagues steal from the kids and don't pay them back (well documented), owe their towns countless dollars (also well documented) and are generally shitty hockey.

Generally speaking when multiple players can't make JrC in Hockey Canada sanctioned leagues, but appear in the non sanctioned Jr A loop those facts speak for themselves. Leagues like the GMHL are fueled by fulfilling parents and players unrealistic desires to play Jr A for a price. One could argue the OHA is only a small step behind them with their pay to play leagues but the fact that they are sanctioned does allow them to carry enough legitimate talent to earn at least a B classification. When Ontario is exporting so many players to the USHL and BCHL I don't think the phrase "oversaturated" necessarily applies. Perhaps pricing itself out of the market is more applicable.

The market is definitely oversaturated. The level of play in Midget has dropped significantly because there's honestly too much junior -- a big part of that is the expansion of sanctioned leagues and part to do with kids who should be playing midget paying umpteen million dollars to go play in the GMHL.Undertaker wrote:Generally speaking when multiple players can't make JrC in Hockey Canada sanctioned leagues, but appear in the non sanctioned Jr A loop those facts speak for themselves. If a player is good enough to play junior that's where he should be, like it was back in the day when Canada produced most of the elite players. That was before Hockey Canada came up with the HDM that chokes player development at 16. It kind of created a niche for more junior level teams. As for major midget, with the exception of a few teams its a great place for players who have given up and are just putting in time.

But my point is that a lot of players should be in major midget because they aren't good enough for junior. Why? Because the level of competition is a lot weaker in Ontario junior leagues than it was 7-10 years ago. Too much expansion in recent years. The GMHL being a part of that.
