The article mentions that Dan may be the first Strathroy native to sit on the OHA board. There was at least one earlier that I know of.

Jack (Jake) Oakes was the former convenor and second vice-president of the OHA. It was expected that Strathroy native Oakes would succeed Clarence “Tubby” Schmalz as OHA president in 1971. Oakes had been at the London Free Press on November 25, 1970 for a meeting being held regarding Jr. A teams and players. The meeting ended at 10:30pm. Oakes was driving home alone and apparently suffered a heart attack while driving. His car left the road, went over a snow bank and stopped along the side ditch. His car was discovered shortly afterward but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at a London hospital. He was 55-years-old and had started with the OHA in 1954.

The SOJAHL championship trophy was named the Jack Oakes Memorial. The Western Jr, B Coach of the Year trophy is also named in his honour.

The Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League was a Tier II Junior "A" hockey league that lasted from the late 1960s until 1977. The league was swallowed by what is now called the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League in 1977.
