This is interesting. If Waterloo wins you wouldn't see Gary Mantz playing for the Siskins after those comments.

I would guess it's the principle that Waterloo is after. Trying to discourage it.

I changed the title of the topic because the way you had it worded, it sounded like Waterloo was being accused of tampering.

Would Waterloo be going after the Kitchener Rangers if Mantz signed an OHL card with them?

Was in Brantford last night with it being the closest pre-season game and this was a big topic of conversation amongst the few people there.

Was explained to me as such...

1. What if Milton or Trenton came and signed Mantz in October? He signed a card with Waterloo, and they would have stopped searching/recruiting for a top six scorer because of that.

2. Most think the NOJHL is slightly weaker or at best even with the GOJHL. When you look at it that way, this is similar to if someone like Kitchener came and tried pulling the same stunt.

3. This opens the door for teams to talk to players who are signed regardless. B Teams, for instance, don't talk to top end Jr. C prospects until after their season is over, otherwise they'd be hit with tampering charges. Teams have to be held accountable, and if Waterloo loses this it could open flood gates for a lot of other shady stuff.

In reference to the OHL thing, if a player is drafted by an OHL team they have free reign with them to speak to them and can take players who have signed cards in A/B/C, should they make their OHL team out of camp. However, they are respectful of the job that the lover Junior teams have to do, and will communicate with them whether they think a player is in the plans or not so a team can prepare for it. If a player is not drafted by an OHL team, but signed to a card, they have to go through the management of the player's team to even speak to him.

It's just common courtesy.
