I've heard Leahy won't be back - has scholarship on the table. That's a big loss.

They'll be a force again next season, they'll find the right pieces to replace the kids that move on.

Leahy and Nash to BCHL, Broomhead to NAHL. With the other guys who have aged out, they've lost a lot of that core.

But as Port said, they're one of those organizations who replaces the talent every year and reloads so well. Looking forward to seeing who's next for them.

It's been an eventful off-season for the Stratford Cullitons.

They've retained several key players who helped them win a Cherrey Cup less than two months ago, but they also lost three players – some of their top scorers – to other teams in other leagues.

Cullitons' director of player personnel Paul Jennings is preaching patience.

“We're not anywhere close to being done yet,” he said. “We're in the middle of everything and are being very active.”

Back next season are forwards Jack Scanlan, Justin Graham, Drew Gross and Dylan Lebold. Defencemen Anthony Kotsovos, Brock Heshka and Jack Wieringa will also return, along with goalie Carson Poulin. There could be more returning players from the 2015-16 season that ended in late April, but Jennings hasn't had a chance to connect with all of those who are eligible.

Players who won't be back include Jared Nash, Hayden Broomhead and Joe Leahy.

Nash (19G, 46A) and Leahy (19G, 29A) have committed to the Penticton Vees of the BCHL. The Vees have a history of nabbing former Cullitons, having lured Mitch Brooks and Brad McClure out west in recent years.

Leading scorer Hayden Broomhead (34G, 44A) will play for the Amarillo Bulls in the North American Hockey League. Former Cullitons Dennis Williams, whose brother Dave is the Cullitons coach, and Mike Watt both have coaching ties in Amarillo.

“Outside of the three guys not returning we're committed to the remaining guys coming back,” Jennings said.

Scanlan's return will help fill the offensive void left by Nash, Broomhead and Leahy, as well as overagers Tyson Baker, Zach Van Louwe, Zander Pryor, Deven Kropf and Josh Miller.

Scanlan had 45 points in his first regular season with the Cullitons but he was arguably the team's best player in the playoffs. The 18-year-old had 13 goals and 33 points in 20 games and has drawn interest from U.S. schools, Jennings said.

“He was a guy we really wanted to retain.”

Graham (17G, 33A) and Gross (8G, 11A) are entering their final seasons, while Lebold (6G, 8A) has three more seasons of eligibility.

On the blue-line, Kotsovos had as many points in the playoffs (17) as he did in the regular season, but in 11 fewer games.

“I felt that from about mid November on he was arguably the best defenceman in the conference through the playoffs and everybody got to see first hand what Anthony brought to our program and why he was acquired here in September,” Jennings said.

Heshka and Wieringa will bring size and mobility the team covets from its defencemen.

They'll be joined by Ryan Nicholson, a six-foot-one defenceman from the Toronto Marlies triple-A program. The 17-year-old “can flat out skate,” Jennings said. “Fits into our mould of being big and mobile. Good puck mover.”

Stratford has also signed forward Nolan Dunn, 20, from the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. The six-foot-three left-winger had seven goals and 19 points in 2015-16.

“Difficult guy to play against, gets to the net and a guy we've known about for awhile,” Jennings said.

The Cullitons will hold a one-day camp June 25. Thirty-six players from across Ontario and the U.S. will be on the ice at the Rotary Complex.

“It will be a real intense day here and we'll get a good look at those guys in our environment,” Jennings said. “We had a great season and a really great playoff run. For us it's maintaining the bar to play in Stratford is very high and our goal is to be back competing for the Sutherland Cup starting Aug. 20 when we start main camp. Our goal is to win every year, and the byproduct of winning is player development.”

I saw this morning that Drew Gross has signed with the Mitchell Hawks.

Must have hinted to the Cullies that he was thinking about C for next year and they told him to make that decision now rather than at Christmas.

They may have lost Gross, but they've picked up:

RW Graham Brulotte, 19, from Lincolns; D Cam Garrow, 20, from Woodstock of MJHL; C Trevor Dulong, 20, from London Nationals; LW/C Keaton Ratcliffe, 20, from Trenton, & D Hugh Anderson, 17, from U16 US program
