thamesford fined

Post by richard »

Noticed Thamesford received a $3600 fine plus Webb the longtime manager received a 20 game suspension. Teams almost need Assistant GM's to help avoid these kind of fines, suspensions. Teams do not have that kind of monies to pay these hefty fines especially at the D level.

Here's the full article.

THAMESFORD - Thamesford Trojans general manager Keith Webb was suspended for 20 games and the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League team was fined $3,400 as punishment for using an ineligible player in the conference semifinal.

The Ontario Hockey Association issued the ruling Thursday after it felt the Trojans willfully broke rule H5 pertaining to player affiliation. The initial fine was $2,500, and $100 was tacked on for each of the nine games Thamesford midget call-up Justin Cooper played beyond the 10-game limit.

Webb, the Trojans’ longtime GM, was not available for comment Thursday evening. His suspension begins immediately and will continue to next season. Thamesford, which hosts the Lambeth Lancers Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Game 1 of the Yeck Conference final, can play between four and 14 more playoff games.

Cooper played 18 regular season games before the OHA noticed and instructed the Trojans not to dress the 17-year-old. Under rule H5, minor hockey players can play up to 10 regular season games with a junior team. Then, “at the conclusion of the player's registered team's season, the players may then advance and play an unlimited number of games.”

Thamesford’s midget team was eliminated from Ontario Minor Hockey Association playdowns March 10.

The controversy represents another obstacle for the Trojans as they try for a third straight SOJHL title.

The conference final will be compact, with three games this weekend and seven games in 10 days if it goes the limit.

Thamesford advanced after scoring two goals in the last five minutes of the third period of Tuesday’s 3-2 Game 7 win over the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs. Connor Allison scored an improbable game winner with 11.8 seconds left in the third period.

Thamesford thought it had won the series in six games but its Game 5 victory was overturned after the OHA determined it had used an ineligible player.

Thamesford finished first in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League with 56 points (26-6-4), just three points ahead of the Lancers (26-9-1). Head to head, the teams split six regular season games, with each club winning twice at home.

The Trojans had a regular season goal differential of +62, while the Lancers were close behind at +50. In the playoffs, Lambeth is +16 after 11 games, while Thamesford is -1 through seven games.

Discipline might determine the winner in the post-season.

Thamesford’s power play clicked at 27.7% against Mt. Brydges. The Lancers were the most penalized team in the regular season but their discipline has improved in the playoffs, where they have killed off 62 of 71 penalties.

Lambeth’s strength is its balance. Seventeen different players have scored at least one goal after two rounds. Mitch Furlonger (4G, 11A), Nick West (5G, 7A) and Tanner Smith (8G, 3A) are all in double digit points.

Goalie J.P. Trudell has played every second of the playoffs and has registered a 3.08 goals-against average and 9.15 save percentage.

Kyle Walker leads the Trojans’ offence with nine assists in seven games. Brandyn Di Domenico scored five goals in the first round.

Goals against were an issue against the Bulldogs, who put 32 pucks past Chris Walker and James Champagne. Walker has a 4.59 GAA and .889 save percentage.
