Head Shots

Post by TmnTyler »

Has anyone else noticed its been a really rough year already? The Nats have lost 2 key players to head injuries this year already and on one the ref (Nutt) who was right beside the hit didn't call anything on a cross check to a downed player's head. If there aren't any repercussions these guys are gonna kill each other out there and nobody wants to see that.

It was just about as disgusting in Strathroy last evening. Hometown “hockey” left town. What showed up and attempted to pass themselves off as referees had absolutely no control by the third period. What should have been an entertaining hockey night was abysmal at best. The only sure thing was a string of players heading to the penalty box.

The GOJHL has a long history of losing players to head injuries. This isn't that new. About 5 years ago most junior leagues looked for ways to reduce head injuries. Almost all leagues brought in additional sanctions for "blow to the head" infractions that increase rapidly for repeat offenders as well as automatic suspensions for 2nd goaltender interference penalty same game. Many leagues have strict blindsiding penalties to address predatory hits. The GOJHL and OHA by extension thought mandatory cages were the answer. There is an opinion within GOJHL clubs that taking similar measures to game management that work in other leagues would destroy the integrity of the game and cause attendance numbers to fall. The reality is that the league's that are mandating cages need to be more vigilant with the above mentioned sanctions than the other leagues because the players falsely believe that the cage protects players from all head injuries. Its affect is really limited to reducing facial and dental injuries only.
