CORVAIRS OUT!

Post by Marcie »

The Caledonia Corvairs are planning on taking a one-year leave of absence from the Ontario Hockey Association's Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Caledonia general manager and director of hockey operations Brian Rizzetto confirmed the move on Monday.

“We're taking a one-year leave and then we'll be back,” he said.

The Corvairs have been one of the most successful junior B franchises over the past decade.

After winning a Sutherland Cup provincial championship as the Brantford Golden Eagles in 2009, the team eventually moved to Caledonia, winning a record-setting three straight titles from 2014-16. The team also lost finals in 2010 and 2012 while still in Brantford and in 2018.

It was the 2018 championship loss that may have been the final straw that broke the camel's back for Rizzetto.

“It's tough when you want to win more than 14 players in the dressing room,” he said.

Rizzetto said the OHA's constitution allows for teams to take one-year leaves of absence. Rizzetto also said that players from the idle team that are sold to other teams become the new team's property while those that are loaned must be returned to the idle team when it resumes play.

Rizzetto said 16 years of running the junior B team as well as other work-related projects were factors in him and the team taking a break.

Rizzetto added that the hope in one year is to return and that he will be an advisor with his son, Michael, taking over.
