WHICH TEAMS SHOULD QUALIFY FOR THE PLAYOFFS?

Post by Marcie »

After watching London manhandle Strathroy last night and seeing how Caledonia destroyed Fort Erie (13-2, 9-2, 16-1, 8-3) and Listowel over Guelph (7-0, 3-0, 11-4) should 8th place teams qualify for the playoffs? Is there a better way to make the playoffs more competitive? Should only the top 4 teams make the post-season? Should only teams with a winning record make the playoffs? The number of teams that have ever won their conference playoff championship below 4th place is very, very rare. It isn't fun for either side watching these games. What are your thoughts?

Top six should qualify. That would make for some decent competitive games. 1&2 get a bye first round also as reward for a good season.

Strathroy/Komoka/St Marys could have had a good round robin series and been competitive also and drawn decent crowds this season.

Lower seed teams have a younger crop of players, and you think we should take away games and practices from them because it isn’t entertaining to the person spending 10$ a game? Some teams like to try and sell their program by developing players. Telling a player there’s a 50% chance he won’t be able to play a playoff game won’t go over well in recruiting.

True but there has to be a limit especially when qualifying for the wildcard can be the goal differential. And how is it teaching any of these kids anything about respect for your opponent and fair play when they (seemingly purposely) run up the scores on lesser opponents. We have seen Caledonia do it for years and it has not been enjoyable to see.......now Listowel seems to be playing the same game. Perhaps there needs to be some sort of mercy rule if the league is going to continue to allow these ridiculous blowouts year after year.

Blowing teams out doesn’t seem like too big of an issue in the West. Leamington had an overtime game against Komoka, and London and Strathroy had two 1 goal games. The ones I notice are the teams in the shoe. Listowel blew out Guelph as well. Allowing mercy rules or anything like kind of beer league ish. Blowouts happen in every junior hockey league. C,B, tier 2, major junior. It’ll never change

Fifth place St. Thomas has upset second place Leamington to earn a spot in the West finals vs London - however the Stars did have a winning record in the regular season. Eight GOJHL teams qualified for the post season with regualar season losing records - Thorold, Welland, Pelham, Fort Erie, Brampton, Brantford, Komoka and Strathroy. Their combined playoff record is 0 wins and 32 losses.

Yep but unfortunately with the the 3 division format they run now you cannot really make 4 teams in 1 division make it and 8 in another. This could easily change though if they switch to the rumored 2 conferences and remove Pelham/Buffalo/Fort Erie. Would make things a lot more competitive.

The lack of a fourth division determines the need for this wildcard in the first place. If another division was created consisting of teams such as the return of the Streetsville Derbys, Bramalea Blues and some of the fat that could be cut from the GTA portion of the OPJHL then you could have only the top four teams from each division qualify for the playoffs. Boy do I ever miss the old Central Ontario league. However, due to cost and other restraints the likelihood of this becoming a reality is probably nil. For now we will just have to let the percentages of a wildcard entry play itself out.
