Winter Hawks officially out, Cambridge Times article...

Post by Ron »

To no one’s surprise, the Cambridge Winter Hawks have been grounded this season.

Though Winter Hawks owner Joe Machado made an attempt to start up the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) — a tier 2 loop — under the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) and Hockey Canada umbrella after cutting ties with the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), and said there was “interest” from more than one league to have the team join, there won’t be a junior B or A squad in the city this season.

Machado said he had a meeting with co-owner Paul Williamson last week and they decided it was in the best interests of the club to stay put and continue talks with Hockey Canada and the OHF for the 2018-19 season.

“It was a difficult decision because it has many implications, particularly, obviously a financial implication for the hockey club and also the implication in the community,” Machado said.

“We have a very strong fan base in our community and we’ve established a really good relationship with our fans. We have good support in terms of our volunteers — over 50 volunteers — and we have very good corporate partners. Of course, the charities; we’ve worked with a number of charities over the last 14 years and helped them raise thousands of dollars for their respective causes.

“We had to consider all of these different implications as far as making that decision to not ice a team this year.”

Machado added the team will retain its ice times for the 2017-18 season and is looking to donate the use of that, and its dressing room, to triple-A midget or bantam teams. He also said the city is holding its ice time for the 2018-19 season, but a decision would be made on whether to keep that next summer, depending on whether they will have a team or not.

Glenn Gedge, the city’s director of administration and booking, said the team no longer has the ice.

Since the Winter Hawks were unable to secure sanctioning with Hockey Canada for the JCHL by a June 30 deadline imposed by the city, the city filled the ice time with Cambridge minor hockey teams for the upcoming season.

In a statement to the Times from the city, it was noted that the Winter Hawks have until Sept. 30 to get sanctioning for a team next season, or the ice time will be opened up for those "seeking an expression of interest for a new group to lease the ice for the 2018-2019 season onward."

Another article about Cambridge. Joe's not giving up and it sounds like he doesn't believe them when they say that his new league can only be sanctioned if under the OHA.

The biggest thing is you need to know who you are stepping into the ring with. I am not sure if JM had a thorough understanding of the politics of hockey in this province.

Wanting to, and going public with getting out of the OHA was his first major mistake. Approaching, and going public, with his attempt at registration through another branch in this province was another major mistake.

His next move, should be looking to cash out of this process altogether. But I get the feeling that swallowing your pride isn't on his agenda.

Machado has officially filed the lawsuit against the OHA, OHF and Hockey Canada.
