Re: Sutherland Cup Format

Port, I'd say I am surprised the score wasn't worse. It would take a Waterloo win to amaze me. Good for the Siskins to emerge with a respectable score. A couple pp goals by Pawley and an empty netter. Good luck to the underdogs in game 2 on their home ice. Hope it helps them narrow the margin, but n...

Re: Stats primer for the 2016 Sutherland Cup* (aka, The Asterisk Series)

Cali, I'm totally correct. What I pointed out is that the majority of your top 16 have played significant games in the OHL, several of them multiple seasons, and several of them over-age trade deadline additions. I've never suggested there weren't non-ex Jr A players on Calendonia's roster -- just v...

Re: Sutherland Cup Format

Good read. Thanks for posting, RG. Have to agree with Mr. Smith. The league's in a tough spot to figure out the best format for the Sutherland but rewarding teams with a second chance just doesn't feel right. I cringe to imagine what the score will be in tonight's game, but hope to be surprised. No,...

Re: Stats primer for the 2016 Sutherland Cup* (aka, The Asterisk Series)

Friends, please don't misinterpret a statement of facts as passing judgement. The facts are what they are, and I challenge anyone to correct me on anything I wrote above. The advantage the Corvairs have created for themselves through their recruiting practices this year is evident in the facts. They...

Stats primer for the 2016 Sutherland Cup* (aka, The Asterisk Series)

Okay all you Jr B nerds, chew on this for a while... The following data, calculated from figures available on the GOJHL website and Eliteprospects.com, compare the combined statistical averages of the top 9 forwards, 6 defensemen and lead goaltender for each of the four teams that have advanced to t...

Re: Stratford(2) vs London(3), Sutherland Cup Semifinal Playoff Thread, & Predictions

RG's right this time. The big story at the Sutherland this year will be all about the Corvairs roster. The final will be a David and Goliath tale, regardless of whether Caledonia meets Stratford or London. And Caledonia's management will deserve every bit of scrutiny they receive in the media, wheth...

Re: Caledonia(1) vs Waterloo(4), Sutherland Cup Semifinals Playoff Thread, & Predictions

Port's right this time. Waterloo will be demolished by the Corvairs. When you look at the Siskins roster and season record, it's a miracle they got as far as they did. And when you compare their roster and season record to the Corvairs, the numbers speak for themselves. I'll be rooting for Waterloo ...

Re: Stratford(2) vs London(3), Sutherland Cup Semifinal Playoff Thread, & Predictions

Great potential to be a great series but impossible to predict until they play a couple games. On paper, Stratford looks a bit younger and bigger; London marginally more experienced and perhaps faster. Given the different size of the home rinks, these teams likely play different styles; London more ...

Hearty congratulations to all the Nats players, coaches and management on a great season so far. A well-deserved victory tonight against an excellent opponent. Leamington is a great club. Hughes an excellent choice for Weir Cup mvp. Goaltending wins close series and he was the man. Good luck vs Cull...

God the entertainment on this forum is rich. Let's see... two qualified, experienced refs on the ice, close to the play vs the losing coach, on the bench, who just had surgery on one eye. Who made the right call? I'll tell you. I'm making the call: Nats in 6. This series is over tomorrow night. :smt...

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

Would like to see video on both goals. Would also like to read less moaning about refs on this forum and more insightful commentary on the actual play. The refs call too many penalties, bitching. They call too few, bitching. It gets so boring and predictable. Refs call 'em like they see 'em. Sometim...

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

I think coach should take flyers2011 advice and start Barrett. I won't predict score other than to say its likely to be fairly low and likely to be a one-goal margin that decides it. Will not be surprised to see OT. And I predict this will be the most intense game of the series so far. Both teams ha...

Re: And the Caledonia debate continues, with plenty of false statements

I agree the kids graduating from minor hockey into the GO should be free agents with an opportunity to try-out (or be recruited) by teams of their choice. Better for the kids and forces teams to compete on more of a level playing field. Owning player rights by virtue of where they live ain't fair.

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

Hope Coach P is well and recovered from his surgery. Tough spot to be in right in the middle of the division final. Wondering if Wall or Barrett will start game 5. Not blaming the youngster for last night's loss -- he made some great saves -- but the Nats lit him up pretty good. May not have been th...

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

London brought their A game tonight. Decisive win when they needed it most. Offense is waking up and Hughes continues solid play. Flyers getting chippier as the series continues and their PIMs are starting to mount. Shot count favors Nats for second game in a row as a result and as predicted. Game 5...

Barrett was a great decision tonight. Nice goals by the Flyers. Nats play was mostly uninspired despite out-shooting Leamington for the first game in the series. Top guys are not producing. Flyers are likely to finish this in 5 unless London gets their act together tomorrow night.

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

People around me, from London and Leamington, thought it was a great game. As predicted, goaltending and special teams have been the difference. Hughes has let 5 by on 68 shots, while Wall has let 5 by on 36 shots. London's PK has been better than Flyers PP, allowing only 1 goal on the man advantage...

Shots tell the tale. Nats offense showed up with its B game. Score could have been much worse if not for two posts and strong goaltending from Hughes. But it's a 7 game series. Nats will rebound in game 2.

Some good analyses here; thanks to those who took the time to share them. Ogie raises two other key factors besides special teams and goaltending. Leadership will also be key... the team with the most boys who step up their games with sheer hustle, grit, determination and sacrifice will win. These t...

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

I base my assessment largely on head-to-head play this past season where the numbers speak for themselves on who the better team is. On your defence/GA point, I'll give you that one, but that's where I say "if the Nats bring their A game." Flyers are a more consistent team, while the Nats ...

Re: Conference Finals: Leamington(1) vs London(2), Playoff Thread & Predictions

This could be the best series of the GO post-season, certainly in the west and perhaps in any division. It's a 1-2 match-up where the #2 Nats were the better team in head-to-head play during the regular season (3-2-1). All games were low-scoring affairs, including an epic 0-0 tie in their first meet...

Agree, RG. London was very lackluster. Vipers' starting Billing proved to be a great coaching decision, too. If the Nats bring their A game they will win the series, but they only get two more chances to get their act together. Game 7 is never a good scenario for a team that goes into it after blowi...

Re: 20 Year Olds Restrictions

It's a Jr. B league, Port. The teams should have Jr. B players on their rosters. That's all I'm saying. In the west, on any given night, any team can win -- like last year when the 7th place Nats eliminated the 2nd place Maroons. This year, maybe the 4th place Maroons will upset the 1st place Flyers...

Thanks again RG. So far, GOFAN999 looks like s/he has the clearest crystal ball in predicting victors in round 2. Who would have guessed three road wins in the first three games Flyers vs Maroons?
